Vocal Wisdom For Effective Communication
Verbal Communication is not always about the language. It is also about how you use the language. Your voice plays an important role in grabbing the attention of the listeners. This becomes vital when you are communicating through the telephone, especially during the times of the pandemic and work from home. In this case, all your listener has is your voice through which he perceives your mood, intention, emotion, and the information you are providing them.
If your job involves interacting with people over a call, then you should know how certain attributes of voice make a difference when used aptly or otherwise. It will help you make your communication clear and effective.
Volume – It is the loudness of your voice. Imagine the loud traffic noise, or kids whispering in the classroom. One would like to turn off both. When you are communicating it is important to control the volume of your voice so that it is pleasant to the ears allowing the listeners to focus on the piece of information that you are providing them. The too loud or too mellow voice may distract the attention of the listener.
Pitch – By definition, it means the highness or lowness of your tone. In other words, it means the height or depth of your voice. Pitch is mostly perceived as the energy factor. Pitch variation in the speech when used appropriately will help you communicate the matter in the right tone. A monotonous way of talking will cause boredom to your listeners. Using variations in your energy while speaking allows the listeners to perceive the information appropriately.
Tone – Your intentions, emotions, attitude, and personality can be judged through inflexions. It is a feeling with which you speak and convey the information. It is not about what you communicate and words you choose, but how you communicate. It makes your listeners perceive the information with the same feeling with which you communicated it.
Pace – It is the speed with which you speak. You tend to speak faster out of excitement, nervousness, or a habit. A high-rate pace does not allow your listeners to grasp what you are communicating. Keep moderate speed, pause whenever required to emphasize certain words to ascertain their importance. It is important to modify the pace according to the listeners.
The above-mentioned attributes are applicable even when you are interacting with someone through a video call or delivering a lecture, speech, or a presentation to the live audience. In case of a video call, you need to take into consideration the technological aspects and connectivity. Whereas in the case of a live audience you need to consider the distance your voice needs to cover to reach each one of the audience. Once you understand the power of these attributes you will enjoy driving your communication effectively.
